Perplexity's Comet Browser Now Free for All Users
Perplexity AI took a bold step in early October by making its Comet browser completely free to the public. Initially launched as a $200-per-month exclusive for Perplexity Max subscribers, the browser had built up a massive waitlist of millions before this shift to accessibility.
Unlike traditional browsers like Chrome or Firefox, Comet is designed from the ground up as an AI-native browsing experience. Instead of tabs, it uses a workspace interface which can be handy but takes some getting used to.
For power users tired of juggling browser extensions, note-taking apps, and research tools, Comet consolidates these workflows into a single intelligent interface.
The integrated Comet Assistant can summarize webpages, answer questions about content, and even navigate sites autonomously. The browser tracks your activity to suggest related content and automatically closes inactive tabs.
By removing the paywall, Perplexity has turned what was a premium product into a mainstream offering. For users willing to pay, Comet Plus provides access to premium content from publishers like CNN, Condé Nast, The Washington Post, and Le Monde.
It is currently available for Mac and Windows with mobile versions and a Background Assistant feature in development.
For creators and developers, this could signal a shift toward AI-first tools that prioritize productivity and seamless integration over traditional browsing habits.
However, one critical factor that, in my personal opinion, many in the tech space neglect is user habit. People are used to the simplicity of Chrome and while Comet does offer advanced features, it may face an uphill battle convincing average users to switch from familiar browsers.
I hope the team of Perplexity doesn't overlook this aspect, especially considering AI features are also getting integrated into mainstream browsers like Edge and Chrome already.
